What’s Wrong with IVF?

For those who believe that God exists and that He loves us, the IVF (fertilization in a laboratory) question is an opportunity to enter into a much better relationship with our Creator.

Parents are “Co-creators”

Human life is the masterpiece of God’s creative work.  God invites human parents to work with Him to bring new human lives into the world.  This is a tremendous privilege, which carries a great responsibility.  We must not take matters into our own hands.

As a father and grandfather, I am awe-struck that I was privileged to help bring new children into the world.  I didn’t deserve, and didn’t earn this gift.

Why IVF is Wrong

We do not have space to discuss all of the bad effects of IVF.  It is better to simply show that it is an offense against the will of our Creator and can never be justified.

To keep the discussion simple, let’s discuss the case of a married couple using IVF with their own sperm and egg, without surrogacy.  Let’s also assume that no “extra” embryos are produced and discarded as waste.

God wishes all of us enter life through the loving union of husband and wife.  “Loving union” means natural sexual intercourse.  Manipulation of the sperm and the egg in a laboratory is an offense against God’s plan.

God’s Way or My Way

The essence of all evil is described in Chapter 3 of the book of Genesis: the Devil claims that God’s will is an obstacle to a fulfilled life.  Regarding the “forbidden fruit”, the tempter says: “God knows that when you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Gen 3:5).

IVF, although appearing to be a good thing, is a repetition of Adam and Eve’s attempt to have a better life by rejecting God’s command.

Infertility is Certainly a Great Hardship

Countless married couples are eager to have children, despite the hardships.  Many are ready to give up everything to raise a large family.  It is a trial when the children do not come.

We don’t know why God allows some couples to suffer infertility.

God Shares Our Sufferings

As we wonder why this sorrow comes into our lives, it is good to remember that God became Man so that He could suffer with us.  We are not alone.    P
