The Blessed Virgin Mary, Part 1

(Plain Text Version)

We believe that God became Man in Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of Mary.  Mary is the human link which makes us the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.

It is only through faith that we can accept this amazing reality.  We should ask God to increase our faith every day.  He will do it!

Mary Prefigured in the Old Testament

As soon as Adam and Eve sinned, God promised that a Redeemer would come.  He would be the offspring of “the woman”.

[to the serpent] I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.  Genesis 3:15

Several times, disaster for the children of Israel was prevented by the action of a woman.  Here are a few examples:

Esther takes great risk in approaching the king to expose a plot against the Jewish captives (Esther Ch. 4-8).

Jael puts the Canaanite army into confusion by slaying their general (Judges 4:1-24).

Judith slays an Assyrian general (Judith Ch. 10-15).

The birth of our Savior was foretold by the prophet Isaiah:

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.  Behold the virgin will conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.  (Isaiah 7:14)

Mary in the New Testament

Mary was committed to life-long virginity (Luke 1:26-35).

Mary was filled with grace in a unique way (Luke 1:28).

At Cana, Mary requested the miracle which started the public ministry of Jesus (John 2:1-11).

Mary was with Jesus during His public ministry (John 2:12).

Mary stood at the foot of the Cross (John 19:25).

Jesus made Mary the mother of all Christians (John 19:27, Rev 12:17).

Mary was among the disciples who received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:14).

And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.  For behold, from now on all  generations will call me blessed;

for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” (Luke 1:46-49)
