Imagine an Everyday Situation
Today is a beautiful day to be driving to work. You even have a green light at a big intersection. Suddenly, someone pulls out in front of you, and you slam on the brakes. You are irritated. Next, he drives so slowly that he gets through the green light and leaves you with a red one. Now you hope that he gets hit by a cement truck.
As you watch him drive away, you start to get yourself under control. You realize that the cement treatment is a bit excessive. You also remember that you have made the same blunder more than once. And, if you were to meet this person, it would be childish to hold this offence against him. By the time the light is green, you have forgiven and have almost forgotten.
Does the Soul Actually Do Things?
Your soul has been busy during this episode. God gave you a soul so that you can think and make decisions. Let’s see what your soul did between the two green lights.
One way to look at your soul is to ask how an animal would have acted. Slamming on the brakes is something you had planned long ago for this situation. A dog would probably have swerved and continued, but you knew that stopping would be safer.
Would the dog get irritated and wish bad things for the offender? No, that is something that people do.
Forgiving an offender is a major work of the soul. It makes us like Christ, who forgives us.
When the Body Quits, the Soul Keeps Working
Imagine you are on your deathbed, surrounded by your family. You are barely breathing and unable to move. Regardless, you are glad to see your family, and love them as much as you ever did. If your love for your family was in the body alone, you wouldn’t have much love left.
The soul never dies, even though it is meant to work with the body. At the end of time, the body will be reconstructed and rejoined to the soul. After this, there is no more death. We will live forever with God or without Him, depending on the choices we are making right now.
Keeping the Soul Healthy
Learning to drive, loving your family and forgiving offenses do not come automatically. They come from years of good choices. Bad choices bring things like careless driving, broken families, and road rage.
Life goes much better when we feed our soul by learning what God has revealed, by prayer, and by being careful with the things we enjoy. When big decisions come up, we ought to pray for guidance from God. A good decision will make the soul stronger and make it easier to make more good choices.
Why not be good to your soul? You will be spending a lot of time together!
