Angels: God’s Messengers

(Plain Text Version)

In order to allow others to enjoy His perfect happiness, God created other beings, capable of choosing or rejecting Him.  In addition to human beings, God created angels.

Angels, the First Created Beings
Before the beginning of time, God created a huge number of pure spirits to enjoy living in His presence and to carry out His plans.  We call these spirits Angels, which means “messengers”, because they bring God’s messages to human beings.  A portion of the angels have set themselves against God.  We call them demons, fallen angels, evil spirits, or devils.  Although the devils are actually angels, we save the name “angels” for the faithful ones.

Why Did God Create Angels?
The simple answer is that angels exist as an expression of God’s love.  God is generous, and wanted other beings to be able to enjoy living in His presence.  Although they live in Heaven, they carry out God’s commands on Earth.  They aren’t in two places at the same time, because they don’t have bodies.  Since we have bodies, we are aware of “where we are”.  For a pure spirit , the term “where” doesn’t apply.
Angels are spirits, but God often commands them to become visible, and to do mighty works.  Throughout the Bible, many of these events are recorded.  One example is Abraham’s three visitors who predicted the miraculous birth of Isaac (Genesis 18: 1-15).

Our Guardian Angels
God has assigned an angel to each human being who ever lived.  This angel, called our Guardian Angel, gives us the help we need to get to Heaven.  If a good thought comes into our mind, it may have been put there by our Guardian Angel.  Our angel is always ready to help us to know right from wrong in our daily decisions.  The decision is ours, but the help is available.
If we are in physical danger, our angel has the power to eliminate the danger.  This is not automatic, but is always done according to God’s will.
It is good to build up our relationship with our Guardian Angel.  We can do this by thanking him and by asking for help throughout the day.

Here is a prayer to our Guardian Angel:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide.  Amen.
