Persecution

(Plain Text Version)

Persecution

Depending on where we live, we may experience a little bit or a lot of  persecution.
In many places, persecution is not so obvious, like biased news reporting or negative portrayal of Christians by the media.
In many places, it is not uncommon for people who freely express their Christian beliefs to lose their jobs, or to be harassed by governmental agencies.
In Australia, Cardinal George Pell spent over a year in prison after very unreliable evidence was presented at a secret trial.
In the United States, Church buildings and statues are being desecrated by violent mobs.
In many places, Christians are not tolerated at all, and must practice their faith in a careful underground way.
Jesus taught us to love others, but not to expect everyone to love us in  return.  He assured us that persecution would happen.  He said that we should rejoice when it happens!
We should take comfort that the words of the Savior are coming to pass.  There are many references to persecution in the Gospels, but I will quote just one:
These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace.  In the world you will have affliction.  But take courage, I have overcome the world.  (John 16:33)

“Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life…”  (John 6:68)
